Pride and Prejudice was a fantastic novel about everyday life in rural England in the 1800s. It is a story about the Bennets: a modest man and his nervous wife who is desperate to marry their five daughters to wealthy young men to improve the family's financial situation. The main characters, Miss Elizabeth (the second eldest daughter) and Mr. Darcy (a wealthy visitor to the country), can barely stand each other. The very rich and very proud Mr. Darcy is instantly disliked by Elizabeth and her family. After his introduction to Miss Elizabeth Bennet, Darcy confides in his friend that she is only "tolerable," but not pretty enough to tempt him. Despite the differences in their social standing, circumstances throw them together when his best friend, Mr. Bingley and Lizzy's eldest sister, Jane fall in love. Mr. Darcy grows fond of Elizabeth's free spirit and "those fine eyes" and goes on a life-journey to win her heart. At first, Elizabeth is too stubborn to accept his hand, but she eventually learns of his true character and must admit how badly she misjudged him. Though it's a hard read when unabridged, I recommend this to anyone who doesn't mind reading romance novels or any Jane Austen fan.
